Ramblin’ Woman, tales of a dark country heart

In five twisted ballads from an anomalous and dimly-lit world, this Ramblin' Woman brings us an atmospheric riddle of blues, country, punk-attitude, and rockabilly shake. Frequently unrefined, and wild in places, this edgier follow-up to Lou’s Nashville LP has a raw style and an uncompromising sound quality, but this is at heart a foot-tapping and grounded take on country music.

Shatteringly honest, Lou yells, mutters and howls, until the clamour breaks away for real moments of fragility, when vocal, sparse guitar, and vintage studio amplification hang in the air, folding back on themselves, thick with plate-driven atmospherics.

Smothered and meandering, like a sprawling river, down-home music has always been haunted by spirits of custom and remains guarded by thick codes of tradition. A bit of this music is exhausted. But, like the first freight train that came slamming into rural music enclaves with the full force of modernity, heralding the surging rhythms of rock n roll, Lou’s outsider take on Americana thunders by with a momentum of its own.

Recorded and mixed live to two-track tape at Dog Tunnel, these sultry arrangements merge with the extravagant, leftover remnants of overdriven valve and studio plate, for a surprising and enveloping dark tone, surrounding, dividing, and shimmering around.
